Weekly round-up #41

Dear Community,

We hope you are doing great!
This week is all about startups and great initiatives we can see flourishing across the continent and of course some news from our Mozillians!
Let’s dive into it!

Mozilla Tunisia
Our Mozilla Tunisia team will be on holidays next week and most of their members back to their home towns. They will rest and enjoy to come back with even more energy for two events planned for April, “Bugzilla initiation workshop” for members to understand the bug management system at Mozilla and how important it is for coding and community management projects. They are also planning a “Geek meet” where anyone will be able to demonstrate a project he was working on, not necessarily a Mozilla related project but anything can be shared with the community to learn and see how this can help in the future, maybe this can be streamed so anyone can join.
So stay tuned on Mozilla Africa and Mozilla Tunisia channels!

#AfricanGeek
This week we discovered a new 100% African web series fighting (with humour) the stereotype on tech and digital, #African Geek.
With this web series the creators aim to show people that new technologies are available for everyone. But they don’t stop there; the big ambition would be to create 10 000 african programmers in 10 years.
A beautiful project – that is both funny and useful!

We Cash Up
Young entrepreneurs are shaking Cameroon! This week we introduce you We Cash Up, a fintech start-up challenging the bank industry!
What is it?
This innovative projects allows

  • people who don’t own a bank account to purchase online,
  • e-sellers to access broader markets,
  • secure access to online payments both for sellers and buyers.

Although the long-term goal is to be internationally recognised, We Cash Up was primarily created for the African market. The developer, Cédric ATANGANA really wants to make a change in Africa and provide a secure online banking platform for the continent.

Weekly round-up #40

Hello Community!

Here’s a special round-up dedicated to women!

But before we dive into that, let us update you on our Mozillians in Tunisia who organized a “Git Party” last Sunday at the Fab Lab Solidaire with new community members and others from clubs and associations. It was 3 hours of basic training where attendees discovered Git, how to start a collaborative project, how to contribute to projects in Github and other things they can partake in Github. Mozilla Tunisia is focusing on Git and Github where they are able to share our projects but can also use it to manage the activities of the community, so the last event was an extreme help for future activities!

Women in tech Africa – Cameroon
On Thursday 11.03. two of our Mozillans, Dorothée Danedjo and Sophie Ngessa took part in a live Q&A on how to succeed and create impact as women in tech, in Cameroon. It was a very interesting session that you can read about on Twitter.

Women Entrepreneurs in Africa
We also came across a very thought provoking article about women entrepreneurs in Africa and the lessons the world can learn from them! Did you know that the rate of women entrepreneurs was higher in Africa than the rest of the world?! For instance, there are 41% of female entrepreneurs in Nigeria compared to 10% in the US! We’ll leave it to you to discover more surprising facts about our continent here.

Women Entrepreneurs in Cameroon
So who are the women making a real change in Cameroon? To celebrate Women International Day, Starter Magazine gave a list of some of the most inspirational women in the country. Discover them here.

Candy from Mozilla Botswana
We would like close this special round-up with the video of our Mozillan Candy from Botswana. Here she talks about her experience at Mozilla, what she loves and why you should join the community!

Weekly Round-up #39

Dear Community,

It’s round-up time again! Today we are talking about the African startups impacting and changing the whole world. Africa is the cradle of creative minds and entrepreneurs and we are proud of it! We can’t help but have a huge smile on our face when thinking and talking about the great initiatives made in Africa.

African Start-ups changing the world
A few days ago, start-ups from all over the world attended the SeedStar World. We had the chance to discover several cool projects in Africa – from tackling unemployment to lack of electricity, African start-ups are essential to our continent and we are proud of them!
AppsAfrica who supported the summit highlighted 16 start-ups that are literally changing the world. Who are they, you ask? Discover them here.

Firefox OS will power the new DX-series UHD TVs
The biggest news of last week was the reveal of Panasonic TV with Firefox OS!
Thanks to Firefox OS, the TV provides three standard choices for “quick access” to Live TV, apps and personal connected devices. Firefox OS can also be personalised by pinning favourite apps or content to the TV home screen. A new Firefox OS update is planned for later this year and will provide new ways to discover Web apps and how you can save them to your TV. Firefox OS will feature Web Apps with curated TV optimized Web content (games, news, VOD, weather and more) and offer users an easy “click to watch” content discovery experience with no installation necessary. Find more info here.

Women in Tech Africa event in Nairobi
Our favourite Women in Tech are back in Kenya and they are ready to celebrate the International Women’s Day with you! This time the event will take place at WE CREATE Centre in Nairobi and will be promoting and discussing the ways women can leverage technology to start and grow their own business.
Don’t forget to book your tickets here.

CodeX in South Africa
Do you know codeX? CodeX in South Africa was the Social Impact Award winner at the AppsAfrica Innovation Awards who run programming courses to make sure the shortage in developers and coders in Africa will be just a vague souvenir in the next few years.
Another coding academy you may say? Well not really because CodeX is revolutionizing the approach by making it fun and in perpetual evolution. It’s a kind of “development shop”, to quote Elizabeth Gould in Disrupt Africa.

Mozilla Tunisia are continuing to move forward!
Last week they organized the SUMO Localization sprint with 9 members attending the event (most of them are not localizers). The results? They finished the localization with 41 articles and 100% of english templates (From English to Arabic.) The event was a chance for 3 new members to join the community. Congratulations to Mack and the team!

Fancy meeting those guys?

Join them for a Git workshop session in collaboration with the FabLab Solidaire Tunisia, this Sunday at 10 a.m (GMT +1) in the FabLab. You will have the chance to follow basic training for the community members and the FabLab members but the event is still public for everyone to join after registration.

Have a lovely weekend all!
